The Work of Being Honest

Inspirational image for quote

"Lying is done with words, and also with silence."

— Adrienne Rich

Adrienne Rich (1929–2012) was an American poet, essayist, and feminist theorist whose work challenged power structures and interrogated the politics of language, identity, and silence. Winner of the National Book Award and numerous other honors, Rich spent her career examining how language shapes reality and how silence functions as both oppression and complicity. Her collections, including Diving into the Wreck and The Dream of a Common Language, explore the intersections of personal truth and political resistance. Rich believed that poetry and honesty were inseparable acts of courage—that to speak truthfully was to refuse the comfort of evasion and confront the systems that thrive on our silence.

Context

This line appears in Rich's 1975 book Women and Honor: Some Notes on Lying, a searing meditation on dishonesty as a gendered survival strategy and a tool of systemic oppression. Rich wrote it during a period of intense personal and political reckoning, as second-wave feminism was interrogating not just patriarchal structures but the internalized ways women learned to self-censor, deflect, and disappear. The essay examines how silence—whether strategic, protective, or coerced—functions as a form of lying. Rich argued that what we refuse to name, acknowledge, or confront becomes a kind of false testimony. This wasn't abstract philosophy; it was a direct challenge to anyone who had ever swallowed a truth to keep the peace, avoided conflict to stay safe, or let an injustice pass unremarked because naming it felt too dangerous.

Today's Mantra

I will not mistake silence for neutrality or peace for honesty.

Reflection Question

What truth have you been withholding—not through outright deception, but through careful avoidance, selective storytelling, or strategic silence? And what would it cost you to finally name it out loud?

Application Tip

Today, identify one conversation you've been avoiding—something you've stayed quiet about to preserve comfort, avoid conflict, or protect someone's feelings (including your own). Write down exactly what you would say if you were being fully honest, not to send or share, but to clarify the shape of the silence you've been maintaining. Then ask yourself: is this silence serving integrity, or is it serving fear? If it's fear, decide whether you're willing to keep paying that cost. You don't have to speak the truth today, but you do have to stop pretending the silence isn't a choice.
