The Cost of Silence

Inspirational image for quote

"Your silence will not protect you."

— Audre Lorde

Audre Lorde (1934-1992) was a Black lesbian feminist poet, writer, and civil rights activist who transformed American literature and social justice movements. As a self-described "warrior mother," she authored influential works including Sister Outsider and The Cancer Journals. Lorde's poetry and essays courageously addressed racism, sexism, homophobia, and class oppression. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1978, she refused to stay silent about her illness or the injustices she witnessed. As New York State Poet Laureate, she inspired generations to find strength in speaking truth to power, teaching that our silence enables oppression while our voices create change.

Context

Lorde spoke these words during her 1977 speech "The Transformation of Silence into Language and Action," delivered at the Modern Language Association. Having survived breast cancer surgery and confronted her mortality, she recognized that the fears keeping her silent—judgment, rejection, misunderstanding—were less dangerous than remaining voiceless. She observed how marginalized people often stay quiet hoping invisibility will provide safety, yet silence enables the very systems that harm them. Lorde's message remains urgent: speaking your truth carries risk, but silence guarantees you'll be complicit in your own oppression. Your voice might not protect you from all harm, but your silence certainly won't either.

Today's Mantra

I speak my truth, knowing my voice creates the change I seek.

Reflection Question

What truth have you been keeping silent about because you fear the consequences of speaking? How has staying quiet actually made you less safe or less authentic than you hoped?

Application Tip

Start small by speaking one difficult truth this week in a safe context. Write it first—name what you've been silent about and why. Then choose one person you trust and practice saying it aloud. Notice that speaking doesn't destroy you; it often brings relief and deeper connection. Build this muscle gradually, expanding from private conversations to larger circles as your confidence grows.
