Sun Tzu on Notification Overload

Ancient Wisdom for Modern Problems
Old words for brand-new headaches

📜 China, 5th century BC  →  Notification Overload

Today's Modern Problem

Your phone has 47 unread notifications, three apps demanding you rate them, and a banner about a sale you will never attend. You pick it up to check one thing. You check all of them.

The Ancient Advice

“He who tries to defend everything defends nothing.”

— Sun Tzu

The Art of War, Ch. 6 (c. 5th century BC)

Who Said It

Sun Tzu (c. 544 to 496 BC) was a Chinese military strategist and general whose treatise The Art of War became one of the most studied texts on conflict in history, read as closely in boardrooms as on battlefields. Little is confirmed about his personal life beyond accounts in later histories, including a famous story of him training the king of Wu's concubines to prove his discipline worked on anyone. His core insight, that scattered effort loses to focused effort, applies well beyond war.

What It Meant Then

This line comes from the chapter on weak points and strong points, where Sun Tzu argues that an army spreading its forces to guard every position ends up weak everywhere. He was advising generals to concentrate strength where it mattered rather than reacting to every possible threat. The point was not caution but priority: knowing which fronts actually decide the outcome and committing resources there instead of diluting them across all of them.

The Modern Translation

Sun Tzu was talking about armies, but he could have been talking about your lock screen. Every app has learned that a red badge or a buzzing phone gets your attention, so they all compete for it at once, and you end up defending against a calendar reminder, a game you forgot you downloaded, and an actual text from your mother with equal urgency. The fix is the same one he gave generals: decide in advance which fronts matter. Turn off notifications for anything that is not a person or a true emergency, and check the rest on your own schedule. You will not miss the sale. You might actually notice when something real comes through, because it will not be buried under forty things pretending to matter just as much.

The Text-Message Version

if everything's urgent nothing is. turn off the notifications that don't matter 📵

Try It Today

Tonight, open your phone's notification settings and turn off alerts for every app except messages, calls, and one or two genuine priorities. Tomorrow, notice how many times you reach for your phone out of habit versus actual need, and how much quieter the real things feel.
