Speak Even If Your Voice Shakes

Inspirational image for quote

"Speak your mind, even if your voice shakes."

— Maggie Kuhn

Maggie Kuhn (1905–1995) was an American social activist who founded the Gray Panthers in 1970 after being forced into retirement at age 65 simply because of her age. Rather than accept the sidelining of older Americans, she built a nationwide movement fighting ageism, nursing home abuse, and the exclusion of elders from public life. Kuhn testified before Congress, organized protests, and confronted power directly well into her eighties. She never softened her message to make it more palatable, insisting that discomfort was often the price of honesty. Her decades of blunt, public advocacy made her one of the most recognizable voices for elder rights in American history.

SELF-EXPRESSION

Context

Kuhn said this after decades of confronting institutions that dismissed her, first for her age, then for her refusal to stay quiet about it. She wasn't offering comfort—she was describing her own method. Public speaking terrified her early on, yet she testified before Congress and faced hostile audiences anyway, voice trembling and all. The line rejects a common myth: that courage requires calm. Kuhn's version of courage was messier and more honest—speak while afraid, not after the fear passes. That distinction matters today, when silence is often mistaken for composure and hesitation for wisdom. Her insight reframes the shaking itself as proof you're doing something that matters, not evidence you should stop.

Today's Mantra

I speak the truth today, shaky voice and all.

Reflection Question

What have you stayed quiet about recently, telling yourself you'd speak up once you felt more sure of yourself? What was that silence actually protecting?

Application Tip

Identify one thing you've been holding back—an opinion in a meeting, a boundary with a friend, feedback for someone in charge. Write it down in one honest sentence today. Then say it out loud to that person within 48 hours, even if your voice wavers or your hands shake. Don't wait for confidence to arrive first. Afterward, note how you felt before, during, and after speaking. Track this weekly to build evidence that shaking and speaking can coexist.
