New Foldable iPhone Is Breaking On Day One

What Owners Are Seeing

Within hours of launch, photos started piling up on Reddit and the MacRumors forums. Nearly all of them show the same thing: a crack along the hinge on the lower half of the inner display, often with a line of bright pixels running across one side of the screen.

Several owners describe the same warning signs. The hinge feels stuck, and sometimes there's a popping sound just before the damage appears.

Some of the first images came from demo phones in China, where the Duo launched hours before the US. Within days, the internet had a name for it: crackgate.

The timing stings. The Duo was already hard to get. Apple told store staff there would likely be no walk-in stock on launch day, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman criticized Apple for opening pre-orders despite severe supply problems.

Apple Breaks Its Silence

On Monday, October 26, Gurman reported that owners had been sending him photos of phones that cracked within hours. Apple then responded. The company acknowledged "an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units" and told anyone affected to contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Apple also said early feedback on the Duo has been very positive.

What Apple didn't say: what's causing the cracks, how many phones are affected, or whether a fix is coming.

According to MacRumors, Apple says the problem is limited. Most owners won't see it, and it isn't expected to show up months down the road. On affected phones, the crack tends to appear shortly after purchase. MacRumors also noted that some viral crack photos appear to be AI-generated, which makes the true scale even harder to judge.

What's Causing It?

Repair site iFixit took a Duo apart and found several possible culprits. Multiple parts come together at the exact spot where the cracks appear. One theory: a center support bar inside the hinge is supposed to retract when the phone opens. If it doesn't, it could press into the screen from underneath.

Not every test has gone badly. Some reviewers folded their early units over and over without any screen problems. But that's a tiny sample compared with the number of phones now in customers' hands.

What to Do If Your Duo Cracks?

If your inner screen cracks, contact AppleCare or visit an Apple Store. Affected owners have been getting replacements in store, though limited stock means some are waiting. Hinge failures from normal use should be covered by the one-year warranty, and new buyers have a two-week return window.

Some buyers aren't waiting to find out. In South Korea, people have been returning Duos that work perfectly fine just to avoid the risk. One buyer told the Korea JoongAng Daily that "Crackgate was decisive."

Crackgate Joins a Long List

Apple has been here before. Antennagate hit the iPhone 4. Bendgate hit the iPhone 6 in 2014. Each one dominated headlines for a few weeks, and each phone went on to sell well anyway.

Whether crackgate fades the same way depends on a number Apple still hasn't shared.

Until then, if you're one of the lucky few holding a $1,999 iPhone Duo, open it gently. And if you feel the hinge catch, stop...
