Listening Before You Answer

Inspirational image for quote

"Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply."

— Stephen R. Covey

Stephen R. Covey (1932–2012) was an American educator, author, and businessman who became one of the most influential voices on personal effectiveness. Born in Salt Lake City, he earned an MBA from Harvard and a doctorate from Brigham Young University, where he later taught. His 1989 book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, sold more than 40 million copies and was translated into dozens of languages. He also co-founded the leadership training firm that became FranklinCovey. Covey built his work on character rather than quick tricks, which is why his view on listening carries weight: he treated it as a discipline, not a courtesy.

MINDFULNESS AND PEACE
LISTENING
PRESENCE

Context

Covey wrote this line in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, as part of his fifth habit: seek first to understand, then to be understood. He observed that people rarely listen with a real wish to understand. Instead they are waiting for a gap, rehearsing their own reply, judging, or steering the talk toward themselves. The sentence is uncomfortable because it describes nearly everyone, including the reader. Its deeper point is that listening is an act of attention, not politeness, and that attention is where peace begins. In an era of constant notifications and divided focus, being fully heard has become rare, which makes giving that experience to someone else quietly powerful.

Today's Mantra

I listen to understand, not to answer, and let silence do its work.

Reflection Question

Think of the last important conversation you had. How much of it were you truly listening, and how much were you building your response? Who in your life might not feel heard by you, and what is that costing both of you?

Application Tip

For one day, practice a simple rule in every conversation: wait two full seconds after the other person finishes before you speak. During your first three conversations, silently restate their main point in your head before answering. Then open your reply with a short summary, such as 'It sounds like you're saying...' and ask one follow-up question. At day's end, write down how many times you caught yourself preparing a response while they were still talking. Repeat tomorrow and aim to lower that number.
